2006 Moody Award Winner Announced

The John Moody Award is ultralight aviation's highest and most prestigious award. It is presented annually to an individual, group or organization that, by their efforts over a period of years, have made significant contributions or advancements of enduring value in the sport of ultralight aviation in the United States.

In keeping with the tradition of this award, USUA is proud and happy to announce the winner of the 2006 John Moody Award is Rainbow Aviation; Brian and Carol Carpenter.

Since the Sport Pilot Rule was implemented in September of 2004, Carol and Brian Carpenter, owners of Rainbow Aviation Services, a full service FBO located in Corning California, have been on the cutting edge. Today, they offer completed sport pilot services for airplane and a variety of services for weight shift and powered parachute aircraft as well.

In accordance with FAA Order 8000.84, Carol and Brian have applied for and received acceptance of the first light Sport Repairman Maintenance course in the country. During the first three weeks of March 2006, Carol and Brian conducted the first course at their facility in Corning, California. The couple team-teaches the course. Carol and Brian now offer both the weight shift and powered parachute modules as well. They are currently working on the glider module.

The Carpenters, are uniquely qualified to teach the Repairman Course. The couple has co-authored /two books: Sport Pilot Airplane: A Complete Guide and A Professional Approach to Ultralights. /Brian is an A&P aircraft mechanic with an Inspection Authorization rating (IA), a DAR for light sport and amateur built, a Sport Pilot Instructor Examiner, an FAA Certified Flight Instructor, an ultralight instructor and examiner, an EAA Technical Counselor and Flight Advisor. He has constructed over 30 ultralight and experimental aircraft and is the designer and builder of the "Ranger" airplane, featured in several aviation publications. Carol is a Sport Pilot instructor, an FAA Ground Instructor with an Advance Rating, a Repairman with a Maintenance Rating, an ultralight instructor, an FAA private pilot, an FAA Safety Counselor, and she holds a California teaching credential. Together they have been presenting the Repairman Inspection 16 hour courses for airplane, weight shift, and powered parachute since the summer of 2007.

Carol and Brian are currently writing a set of 26 maintenance books to compliment the Repairman Courses. Since the Maintenance Course requires a tremendous amount of hands-on supplies for the practical sessions, such as airframes, engines, propellers, tools, and other materials, it isn’t feasible to travel with the course, however they do travel with the 16 hour inspection courses.

THE JOHN MOODY AWARD - Origin of the Award:

The John Moody Award was established in 1991 by the United States Ultralight Association. It is the highest and most prestigious award honoring the history and development of ultralight sport aviation. It is awarded annually to a living individual, a group of individuals, or an organization for efforts over a period of years that have reflected credit upon America and themselves by having made significant contributions or advancements of enduring value in the sport of ultralight aviation in the United States. Nominations for this award are solicited from all segments of the ultralight community; including ultralight enthusiasts, industry leaders, and ultralight clubs. The John Moody Award selection committee reviews all nominations.

Selection Committee:

The John Moody Award selection committee consists of the USUA Board of directors, USUA Regional Representatives, and past recipients of the John Moody Award. The committee meets in a closed-door session during the USUA Annual Meeting where it reviews all nominations and selects a recipient to be honored the following year. All voting is by secret ballot, and votes are tallied by the USUA Secretary and the selection committee Chairman.

The announcement of the winner will be made on or after January 1, by USUA headquarters.

Presentation of the Award:

The John Moody Award is presented annually at the USUA Award Ceremony and Annual meeting. The recipient of the award is notified by USUA headquarters, and invited to the USUA Annual Meeting for the presentation of the award.
