E-LSA Transition Exemption: If you registered your E-LSA before January 31, 2008 but missed the January 31, 2008 deadline to get the airworthiness certificate issued, USUA can help. FAA Exemption 9622 was issued to USUA. This exemption extends the deadline found in 14 CFR 21.191(i)(1), for converting aircraft into the E-LSA category, under certain conditions. If you did register your aircraft before January 31, 2008, this exemption gives you until January 31, 2010 to obtain your airworthiness certificate.

You are eligible to use this exemption, if you meet the following requirements:

  • You are a current USUA Member
  • You provide USUA with written evidence that you have registered your aircraft with FAA prior to January 31, 2008, or provide evidence that an application for aircraft registration was received by FAA's Aircraft Registry on or before January 31, 2008.

If you meet these requirements, you can mail your request for exemption to: USUA PO Box 3501 Gettysburg PA 17325, or to expedite your exemption, USUA invites you to email your request to usua@usua.org.

Your request must include:

  • Your name, address, phone number and USUA member number. (FAA has mandated that in order for you to use Exemption 9622, you must be a current member of USUA. If your membership has lapsed, please renew your membership prior to, or at the time of your request.)
  • Make, Model and Serial Number of your aircraft (this must match the information recorded by FAA for your registration)
  • Registration number (N-Number) as assigned by FAA.
  • A Photocopy of your registration (form 8050-3), or proof that the FAA received your application for registration before January 31, 2008.

USUA will then provide you with a copy of the exemption with a cover letter and instruction on how to use the exemption as soon as your information is verified.
