Ultralight And Sport Pilots Eligible For USUA Insurance; Club Insurance Possible Soon

When the USUA 3rd Party Insurance Program was announced In December 2003, only USUA registered airmen and vehicles were recognized as eligible. This is no longer the case. As a result of ongoing dialog with First Flight Insurance Group, USUA members who hold Ultralight Pilot or BFI registrations with ANY FAA RECOGNIZED ULTRALIGHT AIRMEN REGISTRATION PROGRAM (USUA, EAA, ASC), and/or have registered their ultralights with any said group, are now eligible for the USUA 3rd party insurance program with NO ADDITIONAL RE-REGISTRATION WITH USUA REQUIRED. Additionally, USUA members who are FAA registered Sport Pilots flying FAA registered Light Sport Aircraft under 992 lbs gross weight, with a power off stall speed which does not exceed 35 knots (40 mph), are eligible for this policy as well.

Previously, Ultralight Pilots and Instructors registered with EAA and ASC were required to re-register with USUA to gain access to the insurance coverage. With this new policy, all registered Ultralight Airmen Registrations are recognized by the underwriters as eligible for the USUA Insurance program. USUA membership is still required, but no additional registrations or fees are necessary- making this, now more than ever, the most economical coverage available.

"This breakthrough is the most welcome news to come out of the communication between First Flight, Markel Syndicate (the underwriters at Lloyds) and USUA, since the announcement of the USUA insurance program last December" commented USUA EVP Dale Hooper. He went on to say, "USUA ,and First Flight, have been proponents of this type of inclusion since day 1. It feels wonderful to finally offer USUA members with ASC and EAA airmen and vehicle registrations, the availability of this competitively priced ($375.95 annually) 3rd party liability insurance- with no unnecessary, burdensome requirements. Vehicles ranging from Part 103 Ultralights to the 'Fat Ultralights' and trainers that will be transitioning into Experimental Light Sport Aircraft; as well as many of the new factory-built Special Light Sport Aircraft, can be covered under this policy. It also shows USUA's willingness to remove some of the organizational barriers that have for too long plagued the industry. To help disseminate this news, USUA has notified the EAA Ultralight Council and Aero Sports Connection with this information, and we truly hope that all pilots will take advantage of this program."

"USUA is also pursuing insurance for USUA clubs." Hooper went on to say, " Prospects look hopeful; if the clubs indicate that it is important to them, USUA will negotiate coverage. Basic premises liability, to specific coverage for flying events seem to be what clubs need, but again, our clubs will need to clearly let USUA Headquarters know how important this benefit would be to them." Club presidents are encouraged to contact their USUA Regional Representative, or email USUA Headquarters, with comments.

Hooper ended by saying, "USUA is pleased to be able to continue offering programs and services of this nature to the Ultralight and Air Sports community."
