03/19/2003: On February 22, 2003, the USUA held
its annual meeting in Frederick, Maryland. Its Board met to consider the severe impact
that events, beginning with 9/11 and planned changes in FAA rules and sport flying, have
had on the organization. The organization is facing several major and immediate challenges.
Like, most member organizations, USUA has lost membership and its accompanying revenue.
As technology advances and interest in sport flying evolves, an organization that has
devoted itself solely to ultralight aircraft flying in its early days now finds its
members flying larger aircraft under different rules and conditions. USUA must integrate
these new interests of its members.
Among the many changes being made, the Board is pleased to announce that
Rich Pendergist (a former USUA HQ employee, current President of USUA's Flying Club 1,
and a Basic Flight Instructor) has agreed to accept the position of USUA Executive Vice
President. The organization is fortunate to acquire an individual with Rich's experience
and skills. The Board is deeply indebted to Tom Gunnarson, USUA's departing Executive
Vice President.
